Koinange began his career at Kenya’s national broadcaster KTN and went on to work for Reuters Television from 1995 to 2001, where he covered Africa and served as chief producer. He also held producer roles at NBC News in 1994 and ABC News from 1991 to 1992. His tenure at CNN from 2001 to 2007 saw him reporting on major events such as the Darfur crisis, civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and the famine in Niger, for which he won an Emmy Award. He also reported on Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq War before leaving CNN in 2007.

After leaving CNN, Koinange joined K24 in Kenya as a news anchor and hosted the Capital Talk Show. He currently hosts “Jeff Koinange Live” on Citizen TV and a breakfast show on HOT 96 FM.
