By 1988, while still a college sophomore, he secured a full-time role as an assignment desk assistant. Stevens then served as a production assistant for flagship programs like NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, Today, and Meet the Press.
In 1990, Stevens transitioned to on-air roles, starting as a reporter and substitute anchor at WBBH-TV, the NBC affiliate in Fort Myers. He joined WSVN in Miami in 1992 and, after a brief stint anchoring weekend news at WHDH in Boston from 1997 to 1999, he returned to WSVN.
